Breast lump or breast pain: when to book a doctor
Breast pain can be hormonal, muscular, cyst-related, breastfeeding-related, or medication-related. A lump can also have many causes. The safest approach is not panic, but prompt evaluation when something is new, persistent, one-sided, or clearly different from your usual pattern.
Book a doctor if you notice:
- A new lump, thickening, or swelling in the breast or underarm.
- Nipple discharge, nipple pulling inward, skin dimpling, redness, or scaling.
- Breast pain that is persistent, localized, severe, or not linked with your cycle.
- Breastfeeding pain with fever, redness, or feeling unwell.
